You can have lunch at an idyllic spot by the river! You will arrive in Pokhara in the late afternoon, where there is plenty to see and do. Pokhara is situated along the beautiful Lake Phewa. On a clear day, you can see the snow-capped peaks of the Annapurna range from here. The reflection in the lake is stunning. In the evening, there is a daily Aarti ceremony on the shores of Lake Phewa at sunset that you can attend.
-
Day 2: Drive to Kimche (2.5 hours) - Trekking to Ghandruk (1920m) - approx. 2 hours
After breakfast, you will be picked up by your driver and depart for Kimche, a winding drive through the green mountain landscape. Today, you will mainly be climbing uphill together with your guide and porter. Fortunately, it is only a short hiking day! Along the way, you will meet the local people and pass through many small mountain villages. You will see farmers working their land. You will hike to the village of Ghandruk, where mainly Gurungs live. This indigenous group are self-sufficient farmers who make a living in the mountains from agriculture and livestock farming. Here you will visit a local museum about the Gurung and a Buddhist monastery. If you wish, you can also put on traditional Gurung clothing here. From Ghandruk, you have a beautiful view of Annapurna South (7219m) and Machhapuchhre (6993m).
Ghandruk & the Gurung People
Ghandruk is a picturesque mountain village known for its warm hospitality and impressive views of the Annapurna Mountains. The village is primarily inhabited by the Gurung, one of Nepal’s most famous ethnic groups. These proud mountain people are known for their rich culture, colorful traditional dress, and long tradition as brave Gurkha soldiers. -
Day 3: Trekking to Tadapani (2590m) - approx. 4 to 5 hours
You wake up today to a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains! You climb out of the village of Ghandruk via a stone path and walk past terraced fields. Enjoy a beautiful walk today to the sound of birds and small waterfalls. In spring, the rhododendron is in full bloom, displaying beautiful shades of red and pink. Along the way, you have an incredibly beautiful view of the Annapurna massif, Machhapuchhre (6993m), and Lamjung Himal (6983m). After a walk through an oak and rhododendron forest, you eventually arrive in Tadapani, where you enjoy a beautiful sunset.
-
Day 4: Trekking to Dobato (3420m) - approx. 5 hours
Today, you first walk through a densely forested area full of rhododendrons and climb above the tree line. Here, you once again have a beautiful view of the Annapurna mountain range. You arrive in Meshar Danda. Then the path gradually ascends as you climb to Isharu. Afterwards, you walk up and down between small hills in less wooded terrain to Dobato.
-
Day 5: Trekking to Chistibung (2975m) - approx. 4 to 5 hours
In the morning, you get up early and walk to the Muldai viewpoint. Today you will take a day hike to Lake Khayar, situated at 4,650 meters. Lake Khayar is a sacred lake for Hindus. The lake is visited by pilgrims on the occasion of Janai Purnima, normally in August. Those who bathe in it are said to reach Nirvana faster. You will ascend more than 1,000 meters today. After a strenuous hike, you will pass one last stone Chorten and arrive at the tranquil Lake Khayar with snow-capped mountain peaks in the background. After enjoying the beautiful view of the lake and the surrounding mountains, you will return to Khopra Ridge.
-
Day 8: Trekking to Swanta (2200m) - approx. 5 hours
You first descend steeply and follow the path back to Chistibung. Afterwards, you climb through a forest and reach Kharka. After lunch, you continue. You eventually arrive in the Magar village of Swanta, where you are warmly welcomed.
-
Day 9: Trek to Ulleri (1960m) - approx. 5 to 6 hours
After breakfast in Swanta, the path descends through village fields to a small river. Here you can admire a traditional watermill! Next, you cross a suspension bridge and climb to the village of Chittre, where it is busier again: the trekking route towards Ghorepani also runs here, so it is more crowded. You continue downhill through rhododendron forests to Ulleri, a small but popular village in the Annapurna region.
-

The path continues descending along the side of the river. Next, you walk along the banks of the Bhurungdi River. The path takes you past a swimming pool, a beautiful waterfall, and through bamboo forests. In Birethanti (1000m), you leave the Annapurna Conservation Area. You cross a bridge and walk along the eastern bank of the river. After crossing another bridge, this time over the Modi Khola, you follow the path further to Nayapul. In Nayapul, you will be met by your driver and driven to Pokhara. You can spend the rest of the day as you wish.
-
Day 11: Drive to Kathmandu by private car - 6 to 7 hours
The end of your journey has arrived. Today you drive back to Kathmandu. You stop several times along the way to enjoy the scenery and stretch your legs. The distance isn’t that great, but road traffic in Nepal is slow. You have lunch in route, where you can sample fish caught in the river at a small local restaurant.
Overnight stays
During the Khopra Ridge trek, you will stay in simple yet cozy teahouses run by local families. These accommodations offer a unique glimpse into daily mountain life and ensure a warm welcome after a day of hiking. -
How challenging is the Khopra Ridge trek?
The Khopra Ridge trek is moderately challenging. You will hike an average of 4 to 6 hours per day, with some steeper sections, especially on the day to Khopra Danda. Because you take plenty of time and the stages are evenly distributed, this trek is perfectly manageable for fit travelers over 55 and families with some hiking experience.
-
What is the best time to travel for the Khopra Ridge trek?
The best months are October and November, and March to mid-May. In spring, the rhododendrons are in bloom, while in autumn you have a clear view of the mountains. It is also possible in winter, although you can expect cold nights and sometimes snow. Avoid the monsoon season (June – September) due to muddy paths and dense fog.
-
What altitude do you reach during this trek?
The highest point of the trek is Khopra Danda at approximately 3,660 meters. For those interested, an optional day trip to the sacred Khayer Lake is possible (4,660 m), but it is quite strenuous.
-
Should I worry about altitude sickness?
The risk of altitude sickness is lower than on higher treks, but not impossible. We build up the trek gradually so that your body can acclimatize properly. Watch out for signs such as headache or nausea and always report this to your guide.
-
How are the overnight stays arranged?
You will stay in authentic, local lodges and community guesthouses. These are simple but well-maintained and contribute to the local economy. In Khopra itself, you will stay in a well-managed community lodge with an unparalleled view. You will stay in double rooms; the bathroom may be shared.
-
How is my luggage transported?
A porter carries your main luggage. He carries a maximum of 18 kg of your luggage (per 2 people) in a waterproof duffel bag that we provide on site. You hike with only a light daypack containing water, snacks, an extra layer, and your camera.
-
What kind of clothing and equipment do I need?
Dress in layers. Bring a warm jacket, sturdy hiking boots, rain gear, a sleeping bag (comfort -10°C), walking sticks, and sun protection. You will receive a complete packing list from us before departure.
-
Is there Wi-Fi or mobile coverage during the trek?
Mobile coverage is limited, and Wi-Fi is available in some lodges for a fee. Do not expect a constant connection – use this moment to disconnect and fully enjoy nature.
-
What support will I receive along the way?
You will be accompanied by an experienced English-speaking guide who ensures your safety and provides insight into the local culture and nature. You also have a porter for your luggage. You don’t have to worry about anything.
-
Is this Khopra Ridge trek suitable for a slightly older traveler who doesn't like hiking in crowded areas?
Absolutely. The Khopra Ridge trek was chosen specifically because it is quieter than well-known Annapurna routes like Poon Hill. You encounter fewer tourists and fully enjoy the nature and contact with the local people.
