  • Day 1: Adventurous drive to Pokhara (approx. 7 to 8 hours)

You start your journey with a private car ride from the capital, Kathmandu, to Pokhara. You follow the Prithvi Highway (the only road between Kathmandu and Pokhara). Along the way, you stop at least twice, at one of which you will also have time for lunch.
You arrive in Pokhara in the afternoon, where there is plenty to see and do. Pokhara is situated along the beautiful Lake Phewa. In good weather, you can see the snow-capped peaks of the Annapurna range from here. The reflection in the lake is stunning.
Take a beautiful walk along the lake and a boat trip on the water to the island with the Hindu temple.

    ✈️ Customize your trip?
The route between Kathmandu and Pokhara is traveled by land by default, allowing you to take in the Nepalese landscape along the way. However, those who prefer a faster journey can also take this route by domestic flight . Please keep in mind that domestic flights in Nepal are weather-dependent. Feel free to indicate your preference with your travel request – we are happy to tailor the program to your wishes.

  • Day 2: Drive to Galeshwor (3 to 4 hours) / Trekking to Bas Kharka (815m) - approx. 3 hours

You travel by jeep to the starting point of the trek in Galeshwor. The path to Bas Kharka runs past several remote farms, and you first climb uphill through the forest. Next, before entering Bas Kharka, you walk through orange groves.
You have ample time to visit this small Magar village. The Magars are an ethnic group.
There is a small school and a health post here that you can visit. In autumn and winter, you can enjoy a delicious orange from their own orchards!

    🗺️ Interesting fact
The Magar people were one of the first ethnic groups to settle in the hilly regions of West and Central Nepal. What fewer people know is that they originally spoke their own languages (such as Kham and Dhut Magar), which belong to the Sino-Tibetan language family. These languages are unique in Nepal and are still spoken today in remote Magar villages — living proof of their rich cultural heritage.

  • Day 3: Trekking to Nangi (2250m) - approx. 5 hours

Your hiking day starts today climbing uphill through a forest to a small village. From here, you have a beautiful view of the valley and can get acquainted with the local lifestyle.
Afterwards, you hike on to the village of Nangi, where you will spend the night. Here, too, there is plenty to discover: watch how the locals make paper from locally grown plants, visit the school, the herbalist’s workshop, or a number of other local projects.

📚 Visit to a local school
A visit to a local school can be a wonderful and educational experience for both travelers and children. However, we attach great importance to ensuring that normal school life is not disrupted. Therefore, we only schedule these visits outside of class hours or during breaks. This ensures that education is not interrupted and respects the daily routine of students and teachers — in line with our vision of sustainable and responsible tourism.

Practical

Practical

The Annapurna Community Trek (or Mohare Hill Trek) is a quiet, small-scale hiking route in the Annapurna region, ideal for active travelers over 55 and families. You hike through authentic villages and stay in local community lodges, far away from the crowds.

This page answers all your practical questions about this sustainable and accessible trek. This way, you know exactly what to expect from this unique trek in Nepal.

  • How strenuous is the Annapurna Community trek?

This trek is moderate in difficulty. On most days, you will hike between 4 and 6 hours, with occasional steeper climbs or descents. Because the altitudes remain limited and the distances are reasonable, the trek is quite manageable for fit people over 55 with a good basic level of fitness, and for families.

  • What is the best time to travel for this trek?

The best periods are October–November and March–May. In the autumn, you enjoy clear mountain views, while in the spring you hike among blooming rhododendrons. This trek is also possible in winter, but it is colder in the mountains. Avoid the monsoon months (June–September) due to rain and muddy paths.

  • How high will you get during this trek?

The highest point is Mohare Danda at approximately 3,300 meters. Thanks to the gradual approach, the risk of altitude sickness is low, but we always take the necessary precautions.

  • Are the overnight stays comfortable?

You will stay in community lodges. These are simpler than commercial lodges, but clean, well-maintained, and authentic. You will have your own room (sometimes with shared bathroom facilities), and the meals are cooked with great care.

  • Will my luggage be carried?

Yes, your main luggage is carried in a duffel bag by a porter. You hike with only a small daypack containing water, snacks, and personal belongings.

  • What equipment do I need?

Good walking shoes, a warm fleece, rain gear, walking sticks, a daypack, and a sleeping bag (comfort down to -5°C) are recommended. You will receive a detailed packing list before departure.

  • Is there Wi-Fi or mobile coverage during this trek?

Wi-Fi is not available everywhere, and mobile coverage is limited. Do not expect a constant connection – but that also contributes to the charm of this remote region.

  • How ecological and sustainable is this trek?

This trek is set up as a community-based eco-tourism project. This means that the proceeds go to local villages and that nature conservation, waste management, and local ownership are taken into account. A responsible choice!

  • Is this route less crowded than other Annapurna routes?

Certainly. Unlike the popular Poon Hill trek, the Annapurna Community trek is much quieter. You hardly encounter other groups, which makes for a more authentic experience.

  • Which communities will you encounter during the Annapurna Community trek?

During this trek, you will hike through villages primarily inhabited by the Magar and Gurung communities. These ethnic groups possess a rich culture, reflected in their architecture, agriculture, clothing, and hospitality. You will stay overnight in community lodges run by local families, giving you the opportunity to experience village life up close. By doing so, you also directly support the development of these villages.

  • Do you have any tips for an authentic experience or contact with the locals?

Yes! A smile and a few Nepalese words like “Namaste” or “Dhanyabad” (thank you) are often enough to break the ice. Show interest in their way of life, ask open-ended questions through your guide, perhaps help with a small chore at the lodge, or try a local dish. By choosing this community trek, you automatically stay in places where meeting people is central – without tourist showmanship, but simply as human beings.

  • Can I combine this Annapurna Community trek with other highlights in Nepal?

Yes, this trek combines perfectly with a visit to Pokhara, Bandipur, Chitwan National Park, or cultural excursions in the Kathmandu Valley. If you would like to learn even more about the locals, you can also choose to stay in a community homestay at various locations throughout Nepal.
